A P P E A R A N C E

Weighing in at a mere 110 lbs (59 kg) and standing at 5'9" (179 cm) if he were to straighten his back out of its characteristic slouch, B has an extremely lanky build with long limbs and delicate bone structure. His most striking physical features are his eyes, which are a strange scarlet hue and appear to glow faintly in the darkness. His skin is extremely pale due to lack of sunlight exposure, only adding to his rather sickly appearance. His straight black hair flies about his head in careless disarray, cut unevenly to just longer than chin-length and falling messily over his eyes. He usually wears a long-sleeved white shirt and baggy blue jeans. He goes barefoot whenever he can. His hair, neck, and wrists are frequently adorned with colorful ribbons thanks to his best friend A.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Although he is a serial killer, Beyond is not a cruel person at heart. He does not take pleasure in the act of slaughter and does what he can to ease the suffering of his victims, who are even chosen because they are due to die that day according to his shinigami eyes. His malice is reserved solely for the man he was raised to emulate and worship: L. And despite the fact that he wants nothing more than to completely destroy the great detective, L is the person who Beyond loves most, to the point that he takes great care to mimic L's behavior and appearance.

Beyond's general disposition is rather light-hearted. He enjoys crawling around on floors and eating strawberry jam straight out of the jar with his hand, loves to joke around and compliment ladies... All in all, he is one of the more friendly Wammy's orphans, even if he does come off a bit awkward at times since he loves to stare at people. Unfortunately, because his smile and his high-pitched laugh are reminiscent of a shinigami's, he is often described by others as "creepy".

The boy's mind has always been fragile and the responsibilities of being L's successor pushed him to the breaking point. Because he is surrounded by death, he has become numb to it and is unaffected by guilt after taking a life. His brilliance and curiosity have taken grotesque forms in the execution of his murders as he uses human bodies for experimentation and riddling. The important thing to remember about Beyond, the thing that makes L remember him so fondly that he adopts the name "Ryuuzaki", is that he is not an evil boy... he is simply damaged. The wretched things he does, he does out of misdirected love and devotion.

H I S T O R Y

It is a written law in the world of the shinigami that a god of death must not breed with a human. And yet, if such a thing is impossible, then how did Beyond Birthday come into existence? True to his name, since the moment he was born he had the ability to, at a mere glance, know a person's true name and the day they would die. It was this ~~gift~~ curse that set him apart from the other orphans of the world and led to his arrival at Wammy's House in Winchester, England.

Those were the early days and Quillish Wammy's experiment was in its infant stage. Beyond gained the alias B (which stands, artlessly, for "Backup") and became part of what would later be known as the "first generation" of L's successors. They were test subjects, the first children to endure the training which would determine how much was too much in the search for someone as special and perfect as L. And it wasn't too long before those first unfortunate souls snapped under the pressure of competition. Beyond watched the numbers counting down until the day his greatest rival A succeeded in killing himself. Not long after that, Beyond decided it was time to speed up the process of surpassing not only L's other successors, but L himself.

In May of 2002, Beyond disappeared from the orphanage without a trace. While L was scouring worldwide sources for any clues to his successor's whereabouts, Beyond was quietly making his way across the Atlantic and North America until he finally arrived in Los Angeles. His appearance there coincided with the Straw Doll Murders, a series of "closed-room" killings that baffled the police and FBI. Beyond had decided to orchestrate the greatest challenge for L that he could: a case that could truly never be solved because the killer would, unbeknownst to anyone, also be the final victim. At the same time, he disguised himself as the detective Luxaky Lue to "assist" L's partner Naomi Misora in investigating the murders.

He was about to execute his final victim (himself) when he was pulled out of his world.
